Noobs Guide to Pickleball Paddle Surfaces

Carbon fiber, fiberglass, raw carbon and gritty faces explained in plain English, with what each means for power and spin.

The short answer

The surface (or face) of your paddle is the material that hits the ball. Fiberglass usually gives more power and a bit less spin. Carbon fiber usually gives more spin and less power. Neither is wrong for a beginner, and the surface matters less than weight and grip size.

What are the main surface types?

What are the main surface types?
SurfaceTypical feel
Fiberglass (or composite)Balanced power, control and spin. Often a bit less spin than carbon
Carbon fiberStrong, light, good spin. You make more of the power yourself
Raw carbonCarbon with no paint on top. A rough, gritty face for spin

Composite means two or more materials, usually fiberglass based. Graphite is another face material: thin and responsive, but it can pass more vibration to your hand.

What does gritty or textured mean?

The face has a rough finish that grabs the ball a little. That helps spin. The grit wears down with use, so the spin edge fades over time.

Is a rougher face always better?

No. USA Pickleball limits how rough a face can be. A paddle that is too rough fails testing and is not allowed in tournaments. If a paddle is on the approved list, the roughness has already been checked.

Which surface should a beginner pick?

Either one can work. Fiberglass is a common first choice because it gives some power without much effort. Carbon is worth a look if spin is what you want to learn. Sources do not agree on which has the bigger sweet spot, so we will not claim one.

What about durability?

Carbon is often called the most durable face material. Any face can wear out, and textured grit fades with use.

Will I notice the difference as a new player?

Some. Spin and power change the way the ball behaves off your face, but the first things you feel are weight and grip. Pick those first, then use surface to fine tune.

Do I need to care for the face?

A little. Keep the face clean and dry, and avoid dragging it on the ground. Textured faces lose their bite faster if they are scuffed.
