Noobs Guide to Pickleball Paddle Shapes

Widebody, standard, hybrid and elongated pickleball paddle shapes explained, with the tradeoffs and which suits a beginner.

The short answer

Paddle shape is the outline of the face. Wide paddles have a bigger sweet spot (the zone that hits best), so they forgive off-centre hits. Long, narrow paddles reach further and add swing power, but give you less room for error. Beginners usually do better with wide or in between.

What are the shapes?

StandardBalancedNeither extreme

ElongatedLong and narrowMore reach and power, less forgiving

Exact sizes vary by brand. All approved paddles stay within USA Pickleball limits: 17 inches long at most, and length plus width no more than 24 inches.

Which is best for a beginner?

Widebody or hybrid. When your contact is still inconsistent, a bigger sweet spot saves points. Elongated paddles shine once you hit the middle of the face most of the time.

Why do tennis players like elongated?

The longer face gives reach, and the longer handle often leaves room for a two-handed backhand. The tradeoff is a narrower hitting area, so off-centre hits get punished more.

What is a hybrid?

Shorter than an elongated paddle and narrower than a widebody. It is the middle road, and a sensible first buy if you cannot decide.

Do I need to care about shape right away?

A little. Shape is one of five things to check on a first paddle. Weight and grip size matter just as much.

Does shape change how the paddle swings?

Yes. A long paddle has its sweet spot higher up and a smaller one from side to side. A wide paddle has a larger sweet spot in the middle of the face. If your shots clip the edge a lot, a wider face is the easier fix.

Can I change shape later?

Sure. Most players try a few paddles as they improve. Treat your first shape as a starting point, not a life sentence.
