Noobs Guide to Pickleball Paddle Weight
Light, mid or heavy? A plain English guide to pickleball paddle weight in ounces, and which range suits a new player.
The short answer
For most new players, a middle weight paddle (roughly 7.3 to 8.3 ounces) is the safe pick. It gives you some control and some power. Go lighter if you want quick hands. Go heavier if you want more punch and can handle it.
What counts as light, mid and heavy?
Brands draw the lines a little differently, but the common split looks like this.
| Group | Weight | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Under about 7.3 oz | Quick and easy to move, a bit less power |
| Mid | About 7.3 to 8.3 oz | Balances control and power |
| Heavy | About 8.4 oz and up | More power, harder to move fast |
Check the listed weight. Brands round, and some sources put the mid range at 7.3 to 8.2 ounces or 8.4 ounces.
Why does a light paddle lose power?
Less mass behind the ball. The paddle is easier to swing, so it suits fast exchanges at the net (the kitchen line). Your swing has to do more of the work on drives.
Why is a heavy paddle harder to use?
More mass means more power on deep shots. It also means slower hands when a volley comes at you quickly. Heavy paddles can feel like a lot if you play a long session.
Can I change the weight later?
Yes. Some players add lead tape to a paddle to tweak the weight and balance. Try a paddle as it comes first, then decide if you need it.
Does the weight on the label tell the whole story?
Not quite. Two paddles at the same weight can feel different, because the weight can sit more in the head or more in the handle. If you can, hold a paddle before you buy it.
Which should I buy?
If you are unsure, start in the middle. If you play mostly at the net and want speed, try a light paddle. If your shots land short and you want more depth, try a heavier one. Neither choice is wrong.
