Noobs Guide to Pickleball Paddle Handles
Short, standard or long handle? How handle length changes your swing, and when a long handle helps a two-handed backhand.
The short answer
Handle length is how long the grip part of the paddle is, measured in inches. Most players do fine with 5 to 5.25 inches. A longer handle (5.5 inches) gives room for a two-handed backhand. A shorter one gives quicker hands.
What are the handle lengths?
| Handle | Length | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Under 5 inches | Quick wrist play, smaller hands |
| Standard | 5 to 5.25 inches | Most players and beginners |
| Long | Over 5.25 inches | Two-handed backhands, bigger hands, extra reach |
Brands vary, so check the listed handle length on the product page.
Why would I want a long handle?
Two reasons. You get space for a second hand if you hit a two-handed backhand (common with tennis players). You also get a bit more leverage on swings. The tradeoff is slightly slower hands up at the net.
Does a long handle make the paddle bigger?
Not always, but there is a limit. USA Pickleball caps a paddle at 17 inches long, and length plus width cannot go over 24 inches. So a longer handle can mean a smaller face. Check the face size too.
Is handle length the same as grip size?
No. Handle length is how long the handle is. Grip size is how thick it is around. They are separate choices, and we cover grip size in our grip size guide.
Do I need two hands on the paddle?
No. Plenty of players stick with one hand. A standard handle is fine for that.
How do I find out my handle length?
Check the product page or the spec list, where it is often listed as handle length or grip length. If it is not listed, measure from the base of the face to the end of the handle with a ruler.
Is longer always better for reach?
No. A long handle adds leverage, but the paddle has to stay within the 24 inch limit. You may trade face width for handle length, so check both before you buy.
