Noobs Guide to Pickleball Grip Size
How to measure your pickleball grip size in 30 seconds, what the sizes mean, and what to do if you land between two.
The short answer
Grip size is how thick the handle is around, in inches. Most paddles run from 4 to 4.5 inches. Measure your hand, pick the closest size, and if you land between two, go smaller. You can always build a grip up. You cannot shave it down.
What are the sizes?
| Size | Name | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| 4 inches | Small | Smaller hands, more wrist movement |
| 4.125 inches | Small to medium | Between small and medium |
| 4.25 inches | Medium | Many adults |
| 4.375 inches | Medium to large | Larger hands, steadier feel |
| 4.5 inches | Large | Firm grip, less wrist movement |
How do I measure mine?
Hold your dominant hand out, palm up and fingers together. Line a ruler's zero mark with the bottom crease of your palm. Measure up to the tip of your ring finger.
- Under 4 inches: choose a 4 inch grip.
- 4 to 4.25 inches: choose 4.125 or 4.25.
- Over 4.25 inches: choose 4.375 or 4.5.
Is there a quick check on a paddle I already own?
Yes. Hold it in a relaxed grip. You should be able to slide the index finger of your other hand into the gap between your ring finger and your palm. If it is a squeeze, the grip is too small. If there is lots of room, it may be too big.
Does it really matter?
It does. A grip that is too big costs you wrist movement. One that is too small makes your hand tense up. If your arm already hurts, read our tennis elbow picks.
What if I land between sizes?
Go smaller. An overgrip (a thin wrap over the handle) adds about 1/16 of an inch, so you can fine tune. Our overgrip guide covers how.
Does hand size or height matter?
Somewhat. A rough guide: under 5 foot 2 suggests a 4 inch grip, 5 foot 3 to 5 foot 8 suggests 4.125 to 4.25, and taller suggests 4.5. It is the least accurate method, so use the ruler test if you can.
