Noobs Guide to Pickleball Overgrips

What a pickleball overgrip is, when to replace it, how to wrap one in five steps, and how it changes your grip size.

The short answer

An overgrip is a thin, sticky wrap you put over your paddle's handle. It makes the grip tackier or soaks up sweat, and it adds a little thickness. Swap it when it gets slick, worn or smelly. It costs little and takes a few minutes.

What is the difference between an overgrip and a replacement grip?

An overgrip goes over the grip already on the paddle. A replacement grip (or grip tape) takes the old grip's place and changes the feel more. Start with an overgrip.

Tacky or dry?

Every overgrip sits somewhere between two ends.

  • Tacky: feels sticky. Good in cool or dry conditions, or if your hands are dry.
  • Absorbent (dry): soaks up sweat. Good if your hands get wet.

If your paddle slips mid rally, try the other type.

How do I put one on?

  1. Peel the plastic off. Find the tapered end with the sticky strip.
  2. Start at the bottom of the handle, secured with a small piece of tape.
  3. Wrap up in a spiral, pulling evenly.
  4. Overlap each turn by about an eighth of an inch.
  5. Trim the extra at the top and seal it with the finishing tape that comes in the pack.

Will it change my grip size?

Yes, slightly. Each overgrip adds about 1/16 of an inch. If your handle is already the right size, one wrap can tip it to a bit too big. If you are between sizes, it can help. See our grip size guide.

When should I replace it?

When it feels slick, torn or worn smooth. Players who sweat a lot will go through them faster than players who do not.

Can I use a tennis overgrip?

We have not verified fit across brands, so check that it wraps your handle cleanly. A pickleball pack is the simplest way to avoid guessing.

How often should I wrap it?

There is no fixed schedule. Watch for the signs: slipping, a shiny worn patch, or a smell that will not go away. A fresh wrap costs far less than a new paddle.
